Blog 16-Advert

I am going to analyse two different adverts from famous artists that are in our music industry today. Hed Kandi http://blackboard.sussexdowns.ac.uk/webapps/portal/frameset.jsp?tab_id=_2_1&url=%2Fwebapps%2Fblackboard%2Fexecute%2Flauncher%3Ftype%3DCourse%26id%3D_654_1%26url%3Dackboard%2Fexecute%2Flauncher%3Ftype%3DCourse%26id%3D_654_1%26url%3D In this advert, colours such as "hot" pink and bright light blue are used to draw the audience in to looking at the advert. These colours represent and often are associated with being happy and having fun. These feelings also resemble the genre of music that this advert is about...dance/pop. The background is a dark night sky blue with white random splashes of dots on. I believe they have done this to represent night time/clubbing as this genre of music is mostly and often played at this time of day and in bars and clubs and white dots could be seen as stars. By this coloured background, we can associate what genre of music "hed kandi" makes. The colours in this advert are very bold and stand out. The pattern/picture itself is of what seems to be birds, the moon and some sorts of plants. You could say that this image is rather "pop-art" like. On the left hand side of the advert, "Hed Kandi" is clearly shown in a bright pink to compliment the colours in the image. Next to this, is a smaller logo image which people associate with "Hed Kandi"(their logo). Therefore even for people who don't see the name of the music artist straight away, and just see the logo, they know who they are looking at and who the advert is about. The artist name at the left hand side is written in bold and small cased letters. They have done this because this is the style of "hed kandi" and this font of text is always used of all of their albums/adverts etc. On the right hand side we can see a block colour of pink with text in. This box and text is telling us what will be in the album they are promoting. For example, the DJ's/artists that will be playing. The target audience for this advert would be young adults ages between 18-24 (the age where most people go clubbing and are surrounded by dance music). The genre we can tell as "dance" music because of the colours used (dark and illuminating lighting). It also doesn't have a picture of the artist as many artists are featured on the album as most dance albums do this as well. Also the fact that we can see that DJ's names have been used which you associate with being in a club/dance music. Katy Perry http://blackboard.sussexdowns.ac.uk/webapps/portal/frameset.jsp?tab_id=_2_1&url=%2Fwebapps%2Fblackboard%2Fexecute%2Flauncher%3Ftype%3DCourse%26id%3D_654_1%26url%3D Compared to the "Hed Kandi" advert, this advert is more associated around Katy Perry herself. We can see this by the big long-shot image of her on the left hand side. The whole background of the photograph that includes Katy Perry is made into the whole background of the advert. This includes a greeny background with the sky, a fence and a blow-up swimming pool. We can tell what genre of music this advert and artist does through the mise-en-scene which includes a lolly pop, rubber ducks, a variety of colours and also Katy Perry's costume which is fun and "sexy". All these things we associate with the music genre "pop". The text clearly shows Katy Perry's name in big pink bubble writing that has a slight curve to it. This is girly, fun and ties in with the whole mise-en-scene of the advert. Below this, we can see a smaller image of the album itself that the advert is promoting. I think this is good as the audience then know what the album looks like when they want to go and buy it, unlike head-kandi's advert where the audience aren't sure if the album will look the same as the advert or different. Therefore, they don't know what visual they are looking for. They have also included the name of Katy Perry's biggest hit at the time..."i kissed a girl". I believe they have done this because it was very popular and even if the audience don't know who Katy Perry is, they might have heard of the song and liked it therefore give them incentive to go out and buy the album. Also, another bit of text that i find good is that they have added the official Katy Perry website at the bottom of the advert so people can go and find out more if they want to. 1.) For my first idea/flat plan i have decided to take inspiration from a photo we took for our digipak designs. It is a close-up of an a model lying on the bed with her arm across the top of her head. I like this image very much because of the unusual positioning and also the styling (make-up etc). These two things contribute to the overall feel of the genre of pop (fun). I have placed the image on the right hand side to fill the frame on the right hand side. I will edit the image in photo shop to make the background an image of grass as if she is actually lying on a grass ground. This will compliment some scenes in our music video "brown eyes". Her make-up will include some star drawings near her eye/s and this style will then link into the main text at the top of the left hand side which says "lady gaga". This font will be in "stencil" to match up with the font i used on the album but i will add a couple of stars in to match the make-up styling. This "lady gaga" piece of text will be in the colour of pink to again, match not only the colours in her make-up/outfit but also my digipak design. Underneath this, i will place some more text stating the album/digipak title (the bang-bang edition). These both pieces of text will tell the audience who the advert is promoting and which album they are also promoting. I thought that underneath that again, i would place an image of the actually digipak/album so that the audience know exactly the visual they are looking for if they want to buy it. Some of the audience may get confused if there isn't the picture of the album there and may think it looks like the advert instead. Below that, i will put some text that says when the album is out and also what the main attraction of it is. In this case, the brown eyes video. I will make the colour of the text funky and fun looking by alternating the colour from each word to white and pink to contrast the green grass behind it. You can tell that this advert is associated with the pop genre because of the bright and bold colours and the subject matter and scenery which could be considered as "cheesy" and fun, which most pop artists link up to. The audience would be 12-17 years olds (around about). We can tell this because of the pop genre music and the target audience for the pop music is around this age. These are my own 3 flat plain designs for my own advert

  • lady gaga text in stencil font with pink randomly placed around "lady gaga"

  • image of lady gaga filling the adverts frame-model lying down horizontally

  • small image of the actual album underneath the text saying "lady gaga" to help the audience out with what the advert is actually promoting

  • Text underneath this saying when the digipak is out, video featured etc

  • interscope logo

  • used words like "exclusive" to intise the audience into buying the

  • grass behind the model to appear she is lying down in a field

  • alternative coloured words in pink and white to compliment digipak

  • long shot image of the model (lady gaga) in the middle on the advert

  • an image of an eye behind her in pink

  • white background

  • text box on a tilt at the bottom left hand side saying what the digipak includes

  • quote from lady gaga about the digipak itself on the left hand side

  • "brand new" text so intise audience

  • mid shot image of model (lady gaga) cut off by the left hand side to only show half of the face

  • lady gaga text is big bold black and white letters with a small image of a eye next to it

  • text about the brown eyes featured video underneath

  • interscope logo

  • pink background
My final advert design-

I have chosen to use the same colours as i have in my digipak (black, pink, gold and white) as i wanted the audience to make the link through not only the words, but also the colours used. Therefore they can associate these colours with Lady Gaga. I chose a picture of the artist of her lying down and with direct eye contact. I did this because of the unusual shaping of her positioning which combines the negative space in with the image. Also, by using an image with eye contact, the audience feel that its more personal to them and its as if "Lady Gaga" is actually talking to them which may make them feel more obliged to buy the product and listen to her music. In photo shop, i made a fading in black background into the image itself so that it has more flow. I used the same font for the text that i used on my digipak to combine the two again (stencil). I have placed the name of the artist (Lady Gaga) at the top left hand side slightly over lapping the image of her as i feel that this links the two things up and the audience, if they have heard of the name, but not seen the artist and what she looks like, can then make the link and put a face to the name. I have put this text in bold white stencil font as it stands out from the black background more. Underneath this, i have placed a smaller image of the actual digipak so that the audience looking at the advert know what they are looking for in the shops when they want to buy the digipak. I felt that the image didn't stand out enough though so i decided to put a quirky, curvy square around it which i feel links in to the style of lady gaga and also completes the whole look. My main text is put underneath this. I have used a mixture of white and pink in different lines and certain words to either make a change and make it more interesting looking but also to make certain words stand out that i believe are impacting. I have done this by making them bold, italic or underlining them. I decided to have a mixture of all the different colours but also all the different sized fonts, and types (bold, italics, underlining) as i wanted the advert to look different and in a quirky styling to link in to the style of lady gaga and her pop genre music. In this bit of text, i have put certain words and sentences that i feel will impact more on the audience and make it sound more interesting to read. For example, the words "the one and only lady gaga...". I believe that this gives the impression that you cant hear music like hers anywhere else and for most people in out society, i believe, like individuality and the idea that they are getting something rare and interesting. Another word i have used is "exclusive" which is a word people associate with being rare and being the first to listen to the new music/video. I have included the date the digipak is released so the audience can remember it clearly and can always look back at the digipak to remember it. I have placed a quote from a pop genre based magazine (Q) so that the audience can be reassured that if they buy it they will be pleased as the quote is from a magazine that is well known and trusted. At the bottom left hand cornor i have also added in the lady gaga website address so that the audience can look more into the music and artist.

Over all, i am very pleased with my advert design as i think its colourful, imitates well the style of lady gaga and her music and also stands out. It links in well with the font and colours used to the digipak as well which i think is important as it links the two of them up.
