Blog 15-Digipack

A promo pack is the range of items used to promote a record. For example, a music video, a DVD cover, an advert and a poster. A digi pack is a CD or DVD cover which includes a song we have chosen and the video we are making. Now i am going to analyse two digipak covers from my chosen genre and artist. This is a link off amazon of the digipak of our chosen artists digipak's to look at. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fame-Monster-International-Digipack/dp/B002T4G7TI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1290696508&sr=8-1e-Monster-International-Digipack/dp/B002T4G7TI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1290696508&sr=8-1290696508&sr=8-1Digipack/dp/B002T4G7TI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1290696508&sr=8-1 Front cover-This part of the digipak is the first thing you see therefore must be the main selling point and therefore eye catching. The image used is that of the artist herself, Lady Gaga and this automatically tells the audience the artist on this digipak. The font used to write "Lady Gaga. The Fame Monster" is bright white against the dark/grey scale background and photograph of Lady Gaga. This font stands out due to the colour but also that it is in capital letters which makes it more defined against the background and more pronounced. The letter "T" in the word "monster" is a sort of Gothic cross which links into the atmosphere that the image gives off. This atmosphere could be thought of as sad, mysterious and a physical and emotional mess. They have placed the model/Lady Gaga in the middle of the cover to make her the center of attention as this is one of her personality traits. Eye contact has been used to attract the audience and draw them in. The black and white style that has been used is a contrast to the back cover therefore making it abstract and unique which ties in with Lady Gaga's style. Her make-up is that of black eyeliner pen being drawn on to look like tears which is very abstract and lots of her music video's include this.

Back cover-A contrast has been used to identify the back cover from the front. For example, unlike the front cover, the back is full of colour and the image of Lady Gaga has been made into an extreme close up (basically nearly filling all the frame) rather than the mid shot of her on the front cover. Her unique style is shown on the back cover a lot more than the front cover as she is wearing dark sunglasses, her hair blonde and nice makeup. I think that these two very different images of lady gaga tell us that maybe the feeling that was meant to come across is that she has two different sides to her (personality wise) and we will be able to see this in her range of musical lyrics and contents on the album. The essentials on the back cover include a bar code and details of the production of the digipak. Although the back and front cover differ in many ways, the things that link them together is the fact that a dark background is used in both and also part of the face is covered up in both images with either black hair (front cover) or black background (back cover).

Middle sections-When first opening this digipak we come face to face with two images either side which link into the front covers content and feel. Both images seem to compliment each other well with the compositional element of them having the same colours in, the same model (lady gaga) and also both models images have been cut of the frame slightly in different places. When opening these two "flaps" of the digipak we see two CD's. Both containing the albums songs on. They are similar in the fact that they have the same font type and size, positioning and colours on but on CD has a "1" on it and the other has a "2" on it. This tells the audience which CD to listen to first. The font that has been used on the CD faces is exactly the same as the font type on the front cover and also says the same.

This is a digipak by Britney Spears and her greatest hits. I have chosen to analyse her digipak as she does the same style of genre of music to lady gaga and they are both female.

Front cover:Like Lady Gaga's digipak front cover, the main focus is the artist herself, Britney Spears. She is placed in the middle of the cover and its a full length mid-shot of her. The clothes that she is wearing are skimpy and sexual. I think that she is wearing this sort of thing to attract both audiences, male and female. Females are attracted to this digipak because they inspire too look and be like her, whereas the males are also attracted to it because of the nature of her clothes and her sex appeal. The background to the cover is a simple mid-ton grey to make the artist stand out more and for the audience to not get distracted away from Britney Spears. More femininity has been added though through the lace styled patterned pieces on two corners of the cover. This gives the front cover more detail than just having a plain coloured background. Also, by looking more closely at her clothes, her bra is also made out of lace therefore linking the artist to the background. The feeling that you get when looking at this digipak cover is a sense of dominance. I believe they have made it like this because the album is her "greatest hits" and this links into the feeling on dominance as it shows she has done a lot of songs to create a greatest hits album. I also think that her clothes that she is wearing have this sort of feel to them. The text of the artists name and album title is in a text box and everything is white (the font and outline of the text box). It is all written in capitals and stands out from the grey background. Back cover: the back cover to this digipak is quite simple in the way that only one colour has been used for the background (to match the front covers colouring) and the text it simple and written done one side in plain white writing. However i do like the fact that when actually looking the back cover, the material is actually a silver mirrored glaze. Which gives the back , sparkle and class i feel. It also makes it look more expensive and that is probably one of the main reason that they made it this way. Middle sections: On the left hand side of the middle sections when opening the digipak up, we can see there is a fold where an actual leaflet of thank you's and song lyrics come out from. This makes the digipak more 3D and active. The colouring used is the same as the back and front covers to give it an "all together" feel. In the middle, there is a bonus CD of bonus tracks and videos and the actual CD is filled with a grid full of different images from all Britney's life time and singing career. This makes the audience feel more personal towards her and can follow her life and career through not only the songs but also pictures. The main CD on the right hand side is a plain grey matt colour with the title and artists name on it to match exactly what the text is on the front cover. These are some of my ideas/flat plans of my digipak i am going to make. Idea 1: The front cover i have made the focus to be on Lady Gaga herself as doing research into her album covers, she is usually on it and the main subject matter. Instead of the usual face on images of people i have decided to take a different angle on it. I have drawn lady gaga from an "up-side down" position but with eye contact so its more impacting to the audience. The colours will be dull as i want lady gaga to stand out more and she will have the colourful styling. The font of the album title will be in the font serif and in white bold writing. Lady gaga's name will be more decorative to appeal to the female audience. The middle left hand side section of the digipak is a sepia and antique coloured background and the text on top. This will make the feel of this page older and therefore tie in with half of our music video which is set in the past. I noticed that lady gaga in some of her albums have a section on simply lady gaga writing a little note thanking everyone. This makes the album very personal to not only lady gaga but also the audience as they will feel more in tune with her feelings. The CD itself, i thought about simply using the same text as the front cover stating the name of the album. Looking at lady gaga's digipak i have analysed, i can see that she has done this idea therefore making it a relevant and typical idea that i could use. For the back cover, i thought that it should link into the front cover so i have used the same colouring for the background and lots of negative space. A photograph of a CD will be the main focus and it will have all the songs on it. Idea 2: I have an idea for the front cover that involves using a split face of lady gaga, one half with the modern styling of lady gaga on and the other half using a more classical and classy appearance relating to a Marylin Monroe style. This two styles represent our video well as these are the styles we are using throughout our music video. The photo of lady gaga will be filling the frame/cover to show that its her album. The text at the bottom of the page will be decorative sans serif and italic. The middle section will be a text box in the middle of the page which overlaps a coll um of the left hand side that has lots of brown eye photos going down it. The text box will include dates of her tour and website and ticket information. I have done this so that the audience can look into lady gaga and maybe listening to her music live in concert if they like her music. It gives them something extra to look at and research which makes them more of an active fan. The CD i have designed to match the inside cover/middle section. The background will be black with sparkles on it. I have chosen these colours and effect because i believe it ties in with lady gaga's style; unique, glitz and glamorous. The middle of the CD will include a brown eye and the ring in the CD will become the pupil. The back cover i have drawn out my idea of using a photo of an old record player in the top left hand cornor to show the past/old sections of our video. I have done this because its different to the modern take on the rest of the digipak idea. The list of songs on the album will be listed at the bottom right side and by the side of it there will be a list of bonus songs and the music video-"brown eyes". Idea 3: I made the front cover on this digipak idea slightly different to what lady gaga album covers normally look like. It shows a different side to her and reflects our music video to brown eyes. It includes around six polariod images in a grid format each with a photo of lady gaga in, in different sections/scenes of our music video. Just by looking at the front cover and the images on it, the audience get an insight into the music video and can see what they expect. The middle section/inside cover is of lyrics of the songs of the album. The background is of a 60's style wallpaper colourful pattern and this ties into our theme of the past and the era is which we are styling it in.

For the actual CD inside, i have desgined it to be a sillowette of lady gaga standing up which i believe looks diffferent and modern (which lady gaga and her music is). The back cover i have desinged to be a background of the same 60's patterend wallpaper and with a lady gaga photo in a mid-shot positioning to show some of her clothes. The song list will be layered ontop of the background.

Final:

My final desgin has come about from a selection of ideas from all my digipak ideas. I put them together to make the best idea i could. My front cover is from my idea 1. What i have changed however is the size of the photo of lady gaga, i have made it bigger so it fills up more of the cover. I have done this because i want it to be the main focus. The inside cover i have used a mixture of my idea 1 and 3. I have still used the same background (the eye collum and colouring) but i have seperated two text boxes. One includes lyrics to a song off the album (brown eyes) so that the audience have both the video and lyrics so that they can sing along and become more invloved. The other thext box is of thank yous from lady gaga. The CD i have choosen to use idea 2 as i love the idea that the brown eye's pupil becomes part of the CD shape litrelly. It also links into the main focus of our digipak, the song and video of "brown eyes". The back cover involves idea 2 and is of an old record player. I have changed the sizeing and positioning of the song list and bonus's list thought as i think that people look to the left, below the image before the right hand side.

My final Digipak-

When actually making my digipak on photoshop, i did change a few things about my final desgin of it due to the shape (frame) of the digipak and also through new ideas coming to me while on photoshop. For my front cover i have changed the image of "lady gaga" to a portrait version so that the model filled the frame. I have edited her in photoshop by increasing the colour to make it stand out more and making the whole of the image into a "film grain" effect. I did this as i wanted the colours to stand out through her makeup and top and for them to match therfore i used the colour replacement tool to make this happen. The film grain gave the image something a little bit extra and gave that unique effect and style that lady gaga has in her apperance and music. Also, i have made her hair and the white background blend in together in a slightly different way to the usual fade as i thought this would look boring. In photoshop, i used the"fill in" tool with white paint and this made the effect that the hair has. I really like this effect of the hair and blended background as its really unique, like lady gaga. I have choosen an image of "lady gaga" that uses eye contact as this will incorpriate and intise the audience more. I needed to incoprpriate the who the digipak was promoting (lady gaga) and also the digipak/album title (The Bang Bang Edition). I placed the "lady gaga" across the models arm so that it looks part of her and therefore makes the instint link to the person of the cover and the name. The font i used for the artists name and also the rest of the digipak is called "stencil". I used this font as i felt that it had and looked strong, bold and unique which are all qualitys of lady gaga and her music. I have added in a pink shadow behind the black bold text to make it stand out and make it more 3D. I have made the shadow the same colour as the models top and makeup to make it compliment. I have placed the album title down the left hand side of the front cover to compliment the portrait image of lady gaga of the other side. It also stands out well as the blended background behind it is white. I have used the same font (stencil) but instead of the shadow, i have made the middle two words of the title the same colour of pink so make it different and also when reading the title, the audience, in my eyes and mind, will probably increase volume and intensity when saying the "bang bang" bit which makes it powerful an catchy.

For the spine, i have coloured the background in with the same pink used throughout the didigpak. This makes it stand out and match the rest of the digipak. I have then used a vertical style of text going down the spine in a white so make the text stand out. I have incopriated the title of the digipak and the artists name so that even from the side of the digipak, you can see what you are looking at/for.

For the back cover i got an images of the models legs and high heeled shoes and make them fully pink to match the rest of the digipak's colouring. I then made the background white so not to distract from the image and the front cover too much. I found that when looking at lady gaga's albums and other famous artisits albums, they usually dont have much of the back cover and the main interest is to the front cover. I have listed the songs that will be featured on the digipak and their length of time they go on for. I have done this as lady gaga does this on the back of ther albums so this compliments her style. It also tells the audience around about how long the album will go on for. For the songs, i have made the all up and have made up the song names that i feel reflect the style and uniquness of lady gaga. They are snappy, sharp and catchy. They are also quite "different" and abstract for example, "sneaky" and "snakes and ladders". If you look at other real lady gaga song titles, you can then see the comparrasion between my song title and hers.

LADY GAGA'S

  1. again again

  2. beautiful dirty rich

  3. alejandro

  4. dance in the dark

  5. eh, eh

  6. just dance

Mine

  1. sneaky

  2. snakes and ladders

  3. brown eyes

  4. soho

  5. shadows

  6. flashing cameras

I have placed the list of songs in the middle of the frame as i feel that this is one of the most important things for the audience to know and the eye will be drawn there. Underneath and to the left of the page i have put bonus tracks and videos featured that will also be on the digipak. I have put bonus tracks on the digipak as bonus tracks are usually songs that hasnt been released on the radio yet or exclusive songs so the audience will be more probable to buy the product as they feel they are important and "ahead" of society in music as they are the only ones that they have heard the "new" songs. I have made a list of 3 extra videos that are featured on the digipak, including my groups video to lady gaga's song "brown eyes". At first i only featured this video as being on the digipak but after some research of lady gaga albums and digipaks i realised that her and others actually feature 2 or more music videos therefore i made 3.

In the bottom right hand cornor i have places the bar code so it can be sold in a shop, the director and producer of the digipak, the music company's logo (interscope) that are the company that produce lady gaga herself.

For the left hand inside cover i have kept the colour scheme of pink, black and white to link it all in together. I have put a white column to the left side which i have then put 7 pink eyes in that compliment the big bold eye on the right hand side inside page. I have done this to make the link between the images of the eyes and the song title of "brown eyes" which is the main focus of the digipak. Next to the white column i have made the background black and then placed a pink box at the top which i have added in the lyrics to "brown eyes" in so that whoever buys the digipak they can sing along to the audio or to the featured music video to it. Underneath this i have placed a horizontal image of the model (lady gaga) becuase i found that lady gaga herself uses quite alot of images of herself on her digipaks and albums. I have then put a quote from "lady gaga" towards the audience which says "thank you for believing in me you little monsters. Love, art and musique. Love Gaga xxx" I have made this quote from certain words that lady gaga has actually used to thank her fans but changed it to make it my own and tie in with the digipak. I have added this quote in because it thanks the audience and her fans and this will make the audience whos buys the digipak feel appriciated therefore feel closer to her music and lady gaga.

For the right hand inside cover i have kept it simple as this is where the CD will actualy go therefore not much will be seen and i didn't want it to become too "busy" as well as the other covers surrounding it. However i have taken a picture of an eye and photoshopped in into a "cut out" style/ "pop art" style and made it pink against the plain black background to make it stand out. I have placed the eye right underneath where the CD will be and when the audience take the CD out, they will be approached and see an eye which again links into the theme of the digipak and its main feature. They might even feel that its lady gaga's eye and shes watching them/there when you look and listen to the digipak. This will make the audience feel that she is indudually with them which is a good thing as then the audience/fans feel closer to her and her music.

Over all, i am very pleased with my digipak as its bold, stands out and shows off lady gaga's definitate style and uniqueness. I am pleased with my photoshop skills as well.
